Beyond the Labels
Stack the wine rack and fill the fridge with these bargain reds and whites. Worth up to $25 a bottle, they can be yours for a tiny $10.99 a bottle – winning! In whites, savour Sam Trimboli’s Trophy-winning Trebbiano, swoon over the Gold-medal Steeple Block Semillon, meet the charming Marauding Vintners Miss Grigio Pinot Grigio, be impressed by the full flavour of Angove’s wonderful Bin 256 Chardonnay and the scintillating Fairview Ridge Polish River Riesling and delight in the vibrant Hummingbird Verdelho, shimmering with bright tropical fruit. Reds include Double Gold-medal winners from “magician” (Halliday) John Quarisa, the elegant Notebook Tempranillo, the full-flavoured Six Word Durif Shiraz, the lavish Steeple Block Shiraz (with Gold) and the cool, classy Ravensthorpe Limestone Coast Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (with Double Gold!) These are so good!
A luxurious, special release of the popular Fairview Riesling from vineyards in the highly praised Polish Hill River region of the Clare Valley. Polish Hill River is not an official GI subregion of the Clare Valley. However, as with Watervale, it is regarded as a distinct area within the valley, producing particularly fine Riesling, so the name appears on many labels of wines made from fruit grown around the town.
Rich, spicy Shiraz, unanimously praised by judges at China's Wine & Spirits Awards assuring it a prized Double Gold. It’s from John Quarisa, who for many years made wine for the biggest names in Oz, winning both the Jimmy Watson and Stodart Trophies. Today, with the help of his wife Josephine, he crafts winners like this. ‘Passion is Everything’ is their motto, and, after just over a decade in operation, their winery in New South Wales boasts four stars from Aussie wine guru James Halliday. He describes the “exceptional value for money provided by the wines” and is full of praise for this red. It’s deliciously easy going, but still packs a punch of luscious ripe fruit. A sure bet for a bbq, a roast or a hearty bake.
Black fruit, sweet spice and liquorice make wonderful bedfellows to a blanket of seamlessly integrated tannins. The lengthy flavours lead to a dreamily long finish where vibrant soft fruit makes itself known. Best enjoyed with the classic, rich braised meat of an oxtail stew with a side of crusty bread.
With over 130 years of expertise under the family’s belt, Angove have plenty of experience to call upon. In recent years they have received a ‘Winery of the Year’ title and many medals besides for individual wines. Today, fifth-generation Victoria and Richard Angove run the business, while Sophie Angove oversees viticulture, at the cellar that Dr William Angove started in 1886 near Adelaide (by making award winning brandy – a product they’re still famous for). The new generation continue to pioneer modern styles of wine with a focus on sustainability. Having long since moved away from the weighty, golden, heavily oaked Chardonnays of last century, this beauty embraces bright stone fruit, shot through by lemony brilliance. No wonder the great Chardonnay grape is back in favour.
Gorgeous Gold medal-winning Shiraz. Black grape varieties are particular popular in South Australia, bathing in the Australian sun ensuring optimal ripeness. No more so than Shiraz – the most planted grape in the area. Deep and ripe in black fruit flavour, distinctive in its peppery spice qualities and with a long, moreish finish that will have you coming back for more. With blackberry, plum and fragrant spice, the Steeple Block Shiraz is made for sipping with fine fare like fillet steak or slow-cooked lamb shanks.
The essence of summer: Take all the joy of a summer fruit salad, with the zip and zing of tropical fruit and a dash of sunshine, distil it into a wine and you will have the miracle that is Verdelho. A native of Portugal, this sumptuous grape has really made a home for itself here in Australia. It’s a wine you’ll be seeing a lot more of as it makes it way onto the wine lists of the country’s best restaurants. Love a fruit-forward Chardy without any of the oak? Partial to a tropical Sav Blanc that’s a little less grassy? This is your perfect middle-ground and will definitely hit the sweet spot.
A delicious Gold-winner from vineyards within earshot of the bells that call out from the 'City of Churches', Adelaide. You could almost say this is a real parish pleaser. This classy white is made for lazy warm weather drinking on a sunny Sunday afternoon. The International Challenge Gilbert & Gaillard judges loved its "Complex nose combining lime, white peach and jasmine. Well-defined, fleshy and rich in the mouth, driven by a lovely, invigorating freshness. The pure, crisp fruity aromas are a delight. Gold". The lovely grassy, citrussy Semillon characters bounce off the crisp, mouthwatering palate. The Steeple Block Semillon is simply sublime with fresh seafood. Try it for yourself and see.
Sam Trimboli's 2022 vintage Trebbiano has hit the heights again! This time winning a Gold, Top Gold and a Trophy at the Riverina Wine Show, plus another Trophy and Gold at the Australian Inland Wine Show. Thanks to New South Wales’ hot, dry growing season, the grapes achieved serious ripeness and flavour concentration. As a finishing touch, Sam treated the wine to four months in French oak barrels. You, too, will be impressed by the wine’s ripe citrus-fruit flavours, plus the creamy/nutty nuance imparted by the oak aging. Enjoy a refreshing glass on its own or serve with Italian-inspired cuisine (like white pizza or alfredo-sauced pastas) or fresh seafood dishes.
The Limestone Coast region encompasses some of Australia's most revered viticultural land and, without fail, produces reds with both voluptuous fruit and great structure. The 2022 harvest was characterised by its low cropping levels, which resulted in wines of immense power and concentration. The Ravensthorpe Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon brings together flavours of cassis, blackberry and a hint of the region's eucalypts with well-integrated toasty oak characters. A great wine to share with a hearty meal, and with careful cellaring it will continue to improve over the next 4-6 years.
Introducing Miss Grigio from the Marauding Vintners... she's packing some serious fruit! If you like rich, fragrant and incredibly interesting whites, then you’re going to adore this one. Pick your way through honeysuckle and pear before finding yourself at a delicate finish that’s stimulating and lengthy. We suggest spending some quality time with Miss Grigio, she's the perfect partner over a great long lunch and such good company top sit and relax with as the sun sets.
Get ready for full-bodied, rich fruit flavour with this highly awarded, three-time Gold-winning Caravan Petite Sirah (Durif). It's made by Australia’s hottest winemaker, John Quarisa (or Johnny Q as he’s known). For 20 years John worked long hours at some of Australia’s best wineries, including McWilliam’s, Casella and Nugan Estate. He always dreamed of setting up on his own but kept putting it off. That was until wife Josephine ‘spat the dummy’ (as they say in Oz) and told him to get a move on! Now he works even longer hours, but making his own wine, at his own winery. Taste fresh ripe blackberry and plum flavours, hints of pepper and well integrated toasty vanillin oak. Enjoy with a hearty casserole or steak.
One of our lovely team members, Sandra, came up with the concept for this label when we mentioned a classy new wine was on the way. The photograph was taken by her father of her stunningly beautiful mother Winsome, which they keep in an album referred to as The Notebook. This is the kind of wine you open on the verandah of a holiday house by the water somewhere with good food and great friends! Aromatic and approachable – everything you want in a tempting Tempranillo. Redcurrant and plum with a touch of savouriness, making it ideal with tapas.
