Beyond the Labels
We’ve been buying from top-quality producers across the world for more than 50 years and today, our international wine range is unparalleled. So come with us on a glass-by-glass tour around eight different winemaking countries, taste a dozen superb value reds that have satisfied customers worldwide – and save $117 into the bargain.
Spain offers a juicy young Rioja, a pure Garnacha from Campo de Borja and a mature Tempranillo Gran Selección from Valencia with four Golds. There are Gold medallists from France, South Africa and Argentina too, plus a Trophy-winning Cabernet-rich star from Chile. Cabernet also thrives in Moldova, whose strong winemaking history continues at a few award-winning modern wineries. A classy pair from top estates in Portugal completes your tour.
Altos de Bergasa is from Bodegas La Eralta, a family-owned winery founded in 1990. Quite young in terms of Rioja. It proudly owns 360 hectares of vineyard throughout the three subregions, with this juicy Joven (young) red named after its first plots, planted in the village of Bergasa. At their modern cellars, they boast 10,000 French and American oak barrels, within which they age their wines – from Crianza to their exceptional Gran Reservas. This wine, however, is designed for drinking young and fruity. Offering silky red fruits, with a tangy lift of freshness, it makes delicious drinking on its own, or with chicken – barbecued, roasted or as a creamy casserole – with risotto, as well as with other more classic Spanish rice dishes. Locals love it, and we're sure you will too.
With Gold medals galore, Thierry Ferlay has made wine all over the world but remains fondest of the warm, ripe reds of the southern Rhône. He also adores their chief grape, Grenache – the most important variety in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. In fact he’s in charge of winemaking at this renowned appellation’s only co-operative winery, where all the growers are part-owners of the enterprise. Naturally, maximising quality is at the forefront of their minds, which explains this wine’s exceptional flavour and value. Made purely from Grenache, it has irresistible raspberry fruit, hints of spice and a peppery edge. Enjoy with ratatouille, lamb chops and homemade burgers. And because it’s so smooth and not too heavy, it’s ideal sipping on its own, too.
Château Vartely has already established itself as one of Moldova’s top wineries. It attracts over 10,000 wine tourists every year, despite being founded as recently as 2008. Many of the estate’s vines grow in conditions and soils very similar to those of the best plots of Bordeaux. Wine lovers in the UK have given Château Vartely a big thumbs up, and we do too. From grape harvesting to barrel ageing to bottling, it all takes place under the watchful eye of chief winemaker Arcadie Fosnea. With a diploma in winemaking from a prestigious college in Weinsberg, Germany, he is drawing worldwide acclaim thanks to sumptuous Cabernets like this. Savour with a juicy rib-eye steak, a warming casserole or a generous cheeseboard.
As Robert Parker says, “Spain leads the world for sensational wine bargains of character and soul”, none more so than its mature reds. Take Palacio del Conde – a gorgeously complex, oaky 2016, with FOUR Golds, from Valencia. Part of this region is close to the coast, while the more southerly part is inland, up in the hills, and dry. It’s there that winemaker Marta Martínez selects the finest, hand harvested – from 50 year old vines – Tempranillo grapes for this Gran Reserva, then ages the wine for three years in oak barrels. A wonderfully fragrant, silky red with mature redcurrant and strawberry fruit and a rich, toasty character. Sublime with roast lamb or tapas. Viva L'Espania: nowhere else produces mellow, barrel-aged wines of such remarkable quality and price.
Maria Fadista was a force of nature, who danced to the beat of her own drum and dreamed of starry nights and wild adventure. Jaime Quendera, winemaker behind many of our customers’ favourite Portuguese reds, is thankfully a little more ordered in his life, but was inspired by Maria’s passion and longing. Working with the team at the renowned Pegões cellar, listed as the best co-operative in Portugal a few years back, he has selected parcels of prized Castelão, Alicante and Syrah grapes to create a red brimful with ripe black fruit, dark cherry, cocoa and vanilla spice. It’s difficult to resist on its own, and works a dream with lamb dishes, a rich casserole or pasta dish, or with all the spread of a barbecue when the summer arrives.
Top winemaker Andrea Bernardini has discovered just how to get the most from the superb Nero di Troia grape. The result is the deliciously dark, velvety Corsiero. No need to blend Nero di Troia with softer varieties – gently pressed and carefully vinified, it makes a seductive, deeply flavoured, fruit-rich red. Nero di Troia is named after the town of Troia in northern Puglia, said to have been founded by Greek hero Diomedes, famous for helping to defeat the city of Troy in Asia Minor (yes, the grape really is that old!). Just outside Troia, the story goes, Diomedes planted vine cuttings named Nero after the dark colour of the grape skins and the deep-hued wine. Sumptuous wild blackberry, violet, smoky vanilla complexity. Rich, warming Corsiero is perfect with rich pasta dishes, game or hearty stew.
A quintessential Portuguese red taste experience, brimful with bold bramble fruit that lingers on the palate. Barrel-aged and silky smooth. Number Ten is an exciting new addition from the Portuguese star, Jaime Quendera. He’s a third-generation winemaker, former winner of World’s Best Red and the man behind bestsellers like Rocksand Shiraz and Vinha do Fava. Admittedly it's not quite as hefty as these releases, but it more than delivers on dark fruit and spice. Plus, this new inky red has something else. Instead of weighing in at the usual 14% alcohol (or more), this purrs along at a modest 10%. There’s no dialling back on flavour whatsoever. Delicious proof that you can have the best of everything. Full fruit, lighter alcohol and value.
Opi Sadler is behind many of our most popular Argentine reds. And for good reason - he is a magician of a winemaker. He learnt his skills from an early age in the dark cellars of his grandfather. His family had always made wine and Opi took a healthy interest. That was despite being a little spooked by the sleeping bats that always seemed to come to life as he crept down to the cellar with his candle. He remembers vividly how they'd knock into the it and leave wax prints all over his grandfather’s cellar, hence the name of this wine. Spicy, liquorice-scented Shiraz, cassis-laden Cabernet and dense Malbec create a wine with bags of appealing ripe fruit. Smooth enough to drink solo and great with spare ribs or veggie wraps. It's a Gold medallist made to enjoy young.
Cabernet Sauvignon is known to be the hero of Bordeaux. But this thick-skinned berry also excels in Moldova. It's a country with a strong winemaking history, as well as a handful of award-winning modern wineries - Albastrele being one of these. Since its launch over a decade ago, Albastrele has amassed awards in Europe for nearly every vintage. It shows just how perfect for winemaking the Black Sea-influenced climate in Moldova really is. No wonder that during the 18th and 19th centuries Moldova became the ‘Vineyard to the Tsars’. Made from hand-picked grapes at the Tvarditsa Estate, Albastrele is named after the cornflowers that carpet the vineyards in spring. Winemaker Haraba Marian has crafted a smooth, blackberry-rich, peppery Cabernet in 2020.
For nearly five centuries, the winemaking ancestors of those living and working in the Campo de Borja region sought refuge for their wines in ‘La Cueva’. It was a sanctuary carved into the very mountain itself, a place for them to protect their wines from the searing heat of the Spanish midday sun. Today, the cave provides the perfect cellar for the oak barrels in which the La Cueva Garnacha is aged. Bright cranberry, raspberry, and red plum unite in a juicy combination of flavours and aromas that entice the senses. Subtle black pepper and herbaceous earthy notes give it a savoury groundedness and makes for a fantastic food wine. Salud!
The buzz of bees is music to the ears of grape growers. Because where there are bees, there are healthy vines and pristine grapes. Leon Esterbuizen pays tribute to these essential vineyard workers with this velvety Shiraz, Mourvèdre, Grenache blend. The grapes come from the hardy Swartland wine region – a hilly, dry area that's fast gained a name for quality. Nearly half were taken from old bush vines, which produce fruit of excellent concentration and all were handpicked, in the cool of the night for freshness. Whole bunch fermentation and wild yeasts means a gentle touch in the cellar and more layers of flavour. It’s as smooth as its name would suggest, with layers of ripe berry fruit, herb and spice notes. Great with bangers and mash.
Winner of both a Double Gold and a Decanter Best in Show Trophy, this Cabernet, blended with a little of Chile's speciality grape Carmènere, is a real triumph. Chile’s Colchagua Valley has received more international awards than any other Chilean wine region. Its three prime areas – the mountainous Andean sector, hot central flatlands and cool coastal region – combined form a wine with perfect balance. That’s why Casa Silva planted vines, originally imported from Bordeaux, in each of these back in 1912. These old vines produce grapes of lovely concentration – packed to the rafters with flavour. Like many great wineries, the Silva family incorporate respect for nature into their winemaking. Spending time and pouring care into the vineyard delivers authentic quality in the cellar. You can certainly taste that in this juicy, fruit-filled red. The winemaker Juan recommends it with steak pie or kebabs.
