Beyond the Labels

Our customers can’t get enough of Durif (aka Petite Sirah, though it’s anything but petite!), and when you taste these ones, full of dark, plummy fruit with a mouthfilling intensity, you’ll see why. Enjoy 2 bottles of Sam Trimboli’s super popular Black Duck Durif (nothing little about this!), “magician” John Quarisa’s cult classic Caravan Petite Sirah favourite, the great Steve Grimley’s fabulous The 5OS Project McLaren Vale Durif and the robust Adaptaur Reserve Durif – a wine that’s literally made to accompany a sizzling steak hot off the grill. These are fabulous. Enjoy!

Wine Summary
Matured in American oak, the Black Duck Durif is full bodied and smooth with layers of spicy fruit. It's made by Sam Trimboli, whom many customers will know from his days at Warburn Estate, where he collected hundreds of awards for his legendary skills. During that time he developed an obsession for the obscure Durif, a “stunning little powerhouse grape that develops astounding complexity”, as he describes it. The Durif grapes for this wine come from a small vineyard that Sam helped establish in the 1980s. It’s now at peak maturity. In the 2021, he decided to add a small portion of punchy spice Petit Verdot for extra complexity and dark berry intensity. Perfect with char-grilled steak or strong cheeses, or as a warming glass solo.

Wine Summary
Get ready for full-bodied, rich fruit flavour with this highly awarded, three-time Gold-winning Caravan Petite Sirah (Durif). It's made by Australia’s hottest winemaker, John Quarisa (or Johnny Q as he’s known). For 20 years John worked long hours at some of Australia’s best wineries, including McWilliam’s, Casella and Nugan Estate. He always dreamed of setting up on his own but kept putting it off. That was until wife Josephine ‘spat the dummy’ (as they say in Oz) and told him to get a move on! Now he works even longer hours, but making his own wine, at his own winery. Taste fresh ripe blackberry and plum flavours, hints of pepper and well integrated toasty vanillin oak. Enjoy with a hearty casserole or steak.
Adaptaur Reserve Durif 2022
Named after the cattle, an ideal match with a juicy rump

Wine Summary
The Adaptaur is a tropically-adapted Bos taurus beef cattle breed which was developed in Australia in the 1950s from crosses between Herefords and Shorthorns. Like the bull, the Adaptaur Reserve Durif is the perfect example of careful selection, hailing from selected vineyards in South Australia. The result is a wine that has intensity, decadent and dark with rich flavours of plum and spicy black fruit. Earthy tannins are well balance. An obvious food wine that would do well with the heartiest beef meals.
The 5OS Project McLaren Vale Durif 2020

Wine Summary
Steve Grimley knows a lot about a lot of things, so if he's decided that Durif is the new black, it definitely is! Dense, dark and chocolatey, this McLaren Vale beauty is not so much a little black dress but a velvet smoking jacket, inky and intense. Hand-crafted and given plenty of time in barrel, it's a wine to savour with good friends, good food and great atmosphere. Try it with crusty bread and paté for a decadent experience.
