Taste the best with this stunning dozen of very fine Shiraz from legendary estates around Australia including Tyrrell’s, Taylors, Tabhilk, d’Arengberg, Forest Hill and Knappstein. Taste across Australia, from WA’s Great Southern to South Australia’s famous Clare and McLaren Vale regions and Victoria’s great Nagambie Lakes and Heathcote … these will endlessly impress!
Forest Hill's 94pt Highbury Fields Shiraz 2020 ”Shows how good this vintage was in the Great Southern" (Ray Jordan). The wine was sourced from the estate's vineyards at Forest Hill, Mount Barker East and the northern Frankland River. Pressed to Burgundian oak ranging in size from 225L to 600L with less than 10% new. 10 months maturation before final blending and bottling. Dark fruit aromas and flavours pour forth here: plums and blackberries, with vanilla, liquorice, aniseed and spice. Medium-bodied but dense with firm tannins. Maritime freshness and juicy fruit flavours sum up what makes WA Shiraz well worth getting to know. "… beautiful, flowing fruit. 93pts. Great Value” (Erin Larkin, Halliday Wine Companion).
This Shiraz boasts a long history of excellence, a rich haul of international medals including having been crowned ‘International Champion’ at the 20th annual VINUS International Wine & Spirits Competition. Bill Taylor, grandfather of the current custodian, Mitchell, first set foot on the estate on the same day that Neil Armstrong first set foot on the moon, in 1969. Three generations later, Taylors has a worldwide reputation for excellence. In fact, Taylors has been rated the ‘No. 1 Winery in the World’, out of over 50,000 producers, by the prestigious World Association of Wine Writers and Journalists. The palate of this 2023 is lavish, with balanced, luscious fruit, spice and oak, with Clare’s trademark blueberry flavours.
In 1920, wine lover Reg Purbrick was offered a glass of brandy from Château Tahbilk. Five years later, he purchased the property unseen! Reg's son Eric inherited his father's love of wine and, during the Great Depression, he gave up a law degree to decamp to Oz and take up the reins at Tahbilk. Three generations later, Hayley Purbrick is in charge of sustainability, while her father, Alistair, runs the estate. Since 1995, they've looked hard at sustainability and are just one of 8 wineries worldwide to be classified carbon neutral. Their 160 hectares of regenerated wetland and native vegetation are beneficial to the climate, as well as offering trails for all to enjoy. They also boast Shiraz vines dating to 1860. This classic and uniquely Australian blend is awash with red fruit, spice and savoury notes “… ever-reliable… positively so” says Jane Faulkner in The Halliday Wine Companion. Huon Hooke in The Real Review adds that it is "elegantly crafted… An elegant thoroughbred with some cool-climate attributes. Extra Value here".
Tyrrell's is one of the most famous names in Australian wine. Founded in 1858 in the Hunter Valley, five generations later they still produce some of the country's finest wines. They are renowned for the world's best Semillon and produce many other wines with legendary status. Their list of awards includes Australia’s Best Winery, Winery of the Year 2010, Winemaker of the Year twice in 2004 and in 2009, 14 out of 19 Trophies at the Sydney Show and many more! In 1994 they made their first foray into Heathcote. The excellent structure and white pepper lift of this red are thanks to the ancient Cambrian soils, unique to this area. With firm structure, dense fruit and supple smokiness from 18 months in oak, it's best decanted early or cellared.
Michael Kane, Chief Winemaker at Knappstein has a love for wine, and travel that has led him to visit and work across the world – Burgundy, Champagne, Oregon, Napa and Central Otago, and he has crafted many award-winning wines for celebrated brands such as Devil’s Lair, Stella Bella and Wolf Blass. The team at Knappstein consider themselves guardians of the vines, most of which are in excess of 50 years. They adopt a minimal intervention approach in the vineyard with the aim to create wines of real personality and unique regionality while maintaining rigorous high standards of sustainability. Silky 70% Shiraz-30% Cabernet combination, with juicy flavours of plums, mulberries and blackcurrants melding with dark chocolate and mint-cream on the back palate. Elegant, medium-bodied style with firm tannins and a lingering finish.
A founding member of the First Families of Australian Wine, d’Arenberg was established in 1912, when Joseph Osborn funded his new winery by selling his beloved racehorses. Thunderstep was one of them. An imposing, powerful racehorse and father to Footbolt, the pride of Joseph Osborn’s stable (and now the name of one of the estate’s most iconic and ‘original’ reds). Today, the colourful Chester Osborn, fourth generation, is at its helm, and it “has kept its 100-year-old heritage while moving into the 21st century with flair and elan” (Halliday). It boasts one of the world’s most innovative cellar door experiences and an unparalleled, exciting range. Thunderstep is a superb addition. The 2020 shows an array of dark fruit flavours – plums, blackberries and blueberries – edged with notes of black pepper, dark chocolate, bay leaf and fennel. Complex and concentrated.
