Six classy drops with success either in shows or with high point scores make up this impressive Aussie Pinot Six Pack. Enjoy silky drops from top estates in Adelaide Hills, Tumbarumba and WA’s Mt Barker.
From the family owned Corryton Burge, whose winemaking legacy stretches back six generations to 1855. "Since then, our family has dedicated itself to crafting exceptional wines that have become synonomous with excellence in the Australian wine industry." That family includes legendary figure Grant Burge. Today Trent and Amelia Burge carry on that great tradition at their homestead at Corryton Park in the Barossa's Eden Valley. Their mother grew up in Cornelian Bay, Tasmania, and always wanted to produce wine from her home state. This wine sourced from the acclaimed Coal River Valley – excellent for Pinot Noir – is a delight, with aromas of cherries and Black Forest cake, succulent sweet fruit flavours, delicately edged in oak for a year, giving it attractive savoury notes.
Ned Goodwin MW picks out the sweet cherry and rhubarb among the "loads of flavour" here. The sweet and savoury nose screams Pinot Noir: herbs, mushroom, red cherry, rhubarb, bay leaf and a slice of rhubarb lead to sweet cherry flavours on the palate, woven together with pomegranate, strawberries, vanilla and a touch of truffle. An appealing glassful to accomapany a range of dishes including game pates and charcuterie. 90pts from the Halliday Wine Companion.
Winemaker Bryan Currie has been hunting for the best Pinot Noir grapes around the foothills of the Snowy Mountains near Tumbarumba for 20 years. "It’s taken a long time to get my head around Tumbarumba wine – it’s a truly unique place." His Hungerford Hill Tumbarumba Pinot Noir 2022 showcases notes of ripe cherries, wild red berries and hints of blackberry. These fruit aromas are intertwined with delicate violet florals and a touch of spice. The silky medium-bodied palate builds on the red fruits, with a touch of cranberry and a hint of forest floor or earthiness. Refreshing natural acidity forms the backbone, driving the depth of flavour to a lingering finish. Lovely drinking now but could cellar for 10 years.
A 'hart' is a term akin to stag, the name used for a male red deer. You can see The Hart proudly depicted on the front label of this beautiful 'limited release' Patronus Barossa Valley Pinot Noir. The Barossa might be known for its ripe, warming reds, but for those who know where to go, there are magical pockets of cool climate vineyards tucked between valleys and perched on hillsides. This is where winemaker Andrea Maxwell discovered the special parcel of Pinot Noir which made its way into The Hart Pinot Noir. The wine is light and fruity with aromas of green strawberry, raspberry and rhubarb. It is juicy yet soft and rounded with subtle spice and earthy notes – and its considerable charms have already won it a Gold. A fun and easy drinking red, especially when chilled 20 minutes before serving.
Coppabella is owned by Jason and Alecia Brown, owners of the highly successful Moppity Vineyards in Hilltops. Although Coppabella is an entirely separate venture from Moppity, Jason makes the wines. The couple became aware of the quality of Tumbarumba chardonnay and pinot noir, in particular the quality of the grapes from the 71ha Coppabella vineyard, when purchasing grapes for Moppity Vineyards. This silky 2023 has a Gold and 93pts. Chill slightly and enjoy with a roasted duck breast.
Sam Kim Wine Orbit gives this Yarra Valley Pinot Noir 93pts admiring that is is: "sweetly ripe and brightly expressed, the bouquet shows dark cherry, thyme, floral and nutmeg nuances, followed by a silky-smooth palate offering juicy fruit flavours with supple texture and rounded tannins. Wonderfully balanced and soothing with a lengthy, velvety finish". Ken Gargett Wine Pilot is as positive adding "There is an appealing savoury character here. Fine acidity and bright flavours, leading through to good and quite noticeable grip. A carefully focused Pinot Noir, which should provide pleasure over the next three to five years. 92pts"
