The judges at China's Wine & Spirits Awards were impressed by this rich, spicy Shiraz, unanimously awarding it a Gold. It’s from John Quarisa, who for many years made wine for the biggest names in Oz, winning both the Jimmy Watson and Stodart Trophies. Today, with the help of his wife Josephine, he crafts winners like this. ‘Passion is Everything’ is their motto, and, after just over a decade in operation, their winery in New South Wales boasts four stars from Aussie wine guru James Halliday. He describes the “exceptional value for money provided by the wines” and is full of praise for this red. It’s deliciously easy going, but still packs a punch of luscious ripe fruit. A sure bet for a bbq, a roast or a hearty bake.

And when it comes to breathtaking Shiraz, their trotters rarely stray far from McLaren Vale. The original black pig that inspired this favourite label was a character-filled piglet called Tanuki. His descendants still roam the paddocks today. This excellent Reserve McLaren Vale Shiraz is sourced from select premium sites in McLaren Vale and crafted with a greater focus on oak maturation. The result is a wine of greater depth and structure. Sumptuous blackberry, cherry and bramble, elevated liquorice, cocoa and pepper, with a harmonious cedar spice edge. The premium grapes selected for the Fossilbed Reserve Shiraz 2022 were from vineyards planted in the ancient soils of the Limestone Coast. Stretching from the Victorian border to the Younghusband Peninsula in South Australia, the Limestone Coast is one of Australia's most versatile wine growing regions. Settled since the early 1840s, much of the region was submerged by sea as recently as 2 million years ago. The deep limestone deposits created by coral and ancient sealife are now home to Australia's most important source of fossils and are classified as a World Heritage site. This handcrafted Reserve Shiraz reflects the region's traditional Shiraz style, with rich dark fruit and savoury oak characters working in perfect harmony. Ready to enjoy now, but has the hallmarks of a wine which can cellar for a few years.
