The judges at China's Wine & Spirits Awards were impressed by this rich, spicy Shiraz, unanimously awarding it a Gold. It’s from John Quarisa, who for many years made wine for the biggest names in Oz, winning both the Jimmy Watson and Stodart Trophies. Today, with the help of his wife Josephine, he crafts winners like this. ‘Passion is Everything’ is their motto, and, after just over a decade in operation, their winery in New South Wales boasts four stars from Aussie wine guru James Halliday. He describes the “exceptional value for money provided by the wines” and is full of praise for this red. It’s deliciously easy going, but still packs a punch of luscious ripe fruit. A sure bet for a bbq, a roast or a hearty bake.
Shiraz is very much the hero of Australia’s Barossa Valley. Aussie winemaking legend Peter Lehmann once said “When God created Shiraz, he did so with the Barossa in mind.” Patronus comes from a plot of old vines where the amount of fruit is miserly, but the quality is lavish. The Fleurieu Peninsula is a diverse and exciting coastal region of South Australia. The loose sandy soil and cooling maritime breezes are perfect for growing savoury, aromatic Shiraz with great fruit intensity. Made using traditional techniques, with the aim of expressing our unique microclimate, this is a fresh, lightly oaked Shiraz with a vibrant, generous mid-palate that finishes uninterrupted and long. A great 'food wine' in its youth and with careful cellaring it will mature well over the next 3-5 years.
The premium grapes selected for the Fossilbed Reserve Shiraz 2022 were from vineyards planted in the ancient soils of the Limestone Coast. Stretching from the Victorian border to the Younghusband Peninsula in South Australia, the Limestone Coast is one of Australia's most versatile wine growing regions. Settled since the early 1840s, much of the region was submerged by sea as recently as 2 million years ago. The deep limestone deposits created by coral and ancient sealife are now home to Australia's most important source of fossils and are classified as a World Heritage site. This handcrafted Reserve Shiraz reflects the region's traditional Shiraz style, with rich dark fruit and savoury oak characters working in perfect harmony. Ready to enjoy now, but has the hallmarks of a wine which can cellar for a few years.
